FEEDBACK: HLPF 2019 – Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality

Every year in July, the international development community gathers at the United Nations, for the High Level Political Forum (HLPF)  to discuss big development goals.

By Blandine Bouniol, HI Deputy Director for Advocacy

There, governments present the efforts they’ve undertaken to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the different stakeholders – governments, UN agencies, civil society, private corporations – share perspectives and recommendations. Through the Major Group and other stakeholders coordination mechanism, civil society has a seat at the table. Thus, the HLPF is a key global accountability mechanism for the Agenda 2030.

The theme of this year’s High Level Political Forum is “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality“. HLPF 2019 has been taking stock of progress in education (SDG 4), climate action (SDG 13), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), economic growth and employment (SDG 8), and peace and justice (SDG 16) — all areas very relevant to HI work and our advocacy for the inclusion of persons with disabilities and the building of fairer and more inclusive societies.

Also at the 2019 HLPF, 51 countries are volunteering to present their national reviews of how they’ve been implementing the SDGs and how far they’ve gone.

HI involvement at the HLPF 2019

Three members of HI staff participated in the first week of the HLPF, from the advocacy and technical resources departments, namely Blandine Bouniol, Ruby Holmes and Angela Kohama. They represented HI in the different events they could attend, enhanced their network of contacts, and supported the activities of the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities. HI facilitated the participation of two partners from  ANCEFA, the African Coalition on Education for All: Solange Apko, and Doriane Tchamanbe. You can read here their interview.

HI, ANCEFA and the West African Federation of Persons with Disabilities are partners in a project to promote inclusive education in Sahel, notably in Burkina-Faso, Mali and Niger (see here videos presentating the project and showing inclusive education in practice).

HI is engaged alongside the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities, which promotes the interests of persons with disabilities and advocate for disability inclusion in the implementation, monitoring and reporting on the SDGs.

This year, about 90 representatives of organisations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) and disability NGOs will be attending the HLPF under the umbrella of the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities, coordinated by the International Disability Alliance.
